Others have softer enamel and are at a higher risk of cavities.<\/li>\n<li>Saliva helps to wash away bacteria and prevent tooth decay. Genetics can play a role in the composition of your saliva, thereby affecting how good it is at protecting your teeth.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Taste ability.<\/strong> This refers to a person\u2019s ability to enjoy certain tastes (for example, some people\u2019s genes don\u2019t allow them to enjoy cilantro). The greater a person\u2019s taste ability, the less likely they are to develop tooth decay. Scientists don\u2019t know the exact reason behind this correlation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Your Genes and Your Gums<\/h2>\n<p>There is a definite link between gum disease and genetics. In fact, a recent study revealed <a href=\"http:\/\/newsroom.cumc.columbia.edu\/blog\/2016\/10\/04\/gum-disease-genes-identified-by-columbia-researchers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">41 different genes<\/a> that may be related to periodontal problems. Most of the genes are linked to the body\u2019s immune responses and tendency toward inflammation.
