Man with a dental emergency during his summer vacation

Did you find yourself with an oral injury while you were enjoying your summer vacation? Maybe you slipped alongside a poolside or got hit with a volleyball at the beach, but these situations can leave you worried about what you can do to preserve your oral health. If you are far from home, you can’t easily reach your regular dentist. To help you during your dental emergency, here is a quick guide on what you should do right away.

Step #1: Search For an Emergency Dentist Nearby

Especially if you are in a new area, you may not know of a dental office nearby. You can find one by searching for “emergency dentist near me” or adjust it to specify the area you’re visiting.

Once your preferred search engine spits out many results, take a quick peek at the reviews and ratings, then when you find one you can trust, see if they have same-day appointments available. Seeing what the local community has to say about a certain dentist can help you feel more comfortable getting the treatment you need from them.

Step #2: Give Them a Call to Get Scheduled

The best way you can get scheduled immediately is by giving them a call. Explain to the front office team about the oral injury and any pain or discomfort you’re experiencing. This information will help them get an idea of the state of your oral health and give proper advice on what you can do to care for your teeth at the moment. You may get penciled in, letting you get back to your summer sooner.

Step #3: Get the Treatment You Need

When it’s time for your appointment, be prepared to fill out some paperwork, which will likely be new patient information and your dental insurance. Afterward, you may get some X-rays (this helps show the extent of the damage) and then be shown to your treatment room. Your dentist will do an oral exam and come up with a treatment plan.

Some services can be done on that same visit, like a filling, while more complex procedures may need you to come back sooner rather than later. If the latter is your situation, don’t worry, as you will be given a temporary solution that will give you relief for the time being.

In any situation, finding yourself in a dental emergency can be worrying. Remember these steps and get back to your summer with a renewed smile!
