How to Protect Your Smile from Your Sweet Tooth

Sugar cubes on light gray backgroundCandy, cookies, soda, and other sugary treats can be difficult to resist. Unfortunately, your sweet tooth can affect more than your waistline. Sugar can also harm your dental health. It contributes to tooth decay, which affects 92% of adults. If you can’t resist a sweet treat, it’s important to protect your pearly whites from the damaging effects of sugar. Here are 6 ways to lessen your risk of cavities when a sugar craving hits.

1. Brush More Often

The American Dental Association recommends brushing your teeth at least twice daily for 2 minutes. However, if you consume a lot of sugar, strive to brush at least after every meal. You might consider a travel oral hygiene kit to make it easy to brush your teeth when you’re not at home. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste to keep your teeth clean and healthy.

2. Floss Every Day

Your toothbrush can’t reach everywhere in your mouth, like between your teeth. Flossing is the only way to clean areas where your toothbrush can’t fit. Commit to flossing your teeth at least once daily.

3. Drink More Water

Healthcare professionals recommend drinking at least eight 8-oz glasses of water daily to stay hydrated. Water also keeps your mouth moist and cleanses it with every sip you take. It’s best to drink water whenever possible. Choose water from the tap because it contains fluoride, which is known as “nature’s cavity fighter,” because it promotes strong enamel.

4. Chew Sugarless Gum

Chewing sugarless gum increases saliva production to rinse away food debris and plaque. It’s not a substitute for brushing and flossing, but it can help to keep your mouth clean.

5. Alternate Your Snacks

Although you love sweet treats, try to choose healthier alternatives, like low-fat dairy products for strong teeth and bones. Crisp vegetables are an excellent snack because they contain essential nutrients. They also act as scrub brushes for your teeth. Fruit is also a great snack, but moderate your consumption because they contain natural sugars.

6. Visit Your Dentist

Schedule a cleaning and checkup with your dentist every 6 months. They’ll monitor your dental health to detect anything concerning, like enamel loss. They can create a personalized treatment plan to safeguard your teeth from your sweet tooth, like fluoride varnish or dental sealants.

Although everyone enjoys a sugary snack, it’s important to limit them. Your mouth and body will appreciate a reduction in your sugar intake.
