Have you ever considered the connection between your smile and your romantic relationships? It’s often the first thing a potential partner will notice when they meet you. But beyond just aesthetics, your dental health—for better or for worse, could play a significant role in your love life. If you’re curious how your oral health fits into the romantic equation, continue reading. You’ll learn what you can do to keep your smile—and your relationships—healthy.

The Statistics Don’t Lie

Match.com is a behemoth in the dating scene with millions of users every day. So, when they do a survey, they have an appropriately large sample size to draw from at any given time. Match found that the most attractive “must-have” feature by far for their users was healthy teeth with 58 percent of men and 71 percent of women. So, your smile and your dental health in general are the best indicators of “dateablity” by a fairly large margin!

Bad Breath Botches Dates

Your dental health affects your whole mouth, not just your teeth. In the same survey, 85 percent of participants said they were dissuaded from a second date by an odor issue. Many of them specifically cited bad breath as their big turnoff. When food particles in your mouth are broken down by bacteria, it creates sulfuric compounds that can linger for days without proper care.

To ensure you don’t fall victim to the bad breath blues, brush your teeth at least twice per day, floss every night before bed, and consider rinsing with an antibacterial mouthwash to obliterate bad breath germs.

Great Smiles Grant Confidence

A healthy smile is not just about looking good; it can also have a great impact on your confidence and self-esteem. These are essential components of beginning successful relationships. When you feel good about your smile, you’re more likely to smile and be more engaged, with your dates. Believe it or not, these are far more attractive qualities than your clothes or what kind of car you drive!

Your dental health is the most powerful tool in your romantic arsenal. If you don’t prioritize it, it will become dull and may even work against you in some social situations! Remember, a healthy smile isn’t just good for your teeth—it’s good for your love life too. So, if you’ve got a date coming up, visit your dentist first. They’ll help you get ready for a perfect evening full of intimate moments and genuine smiles.
